Viktor Petrenko

Viktor Petrenko (Ukrainian Віктор Петренко, also Russian Виктор Васильевич Петренко, Viktor Vasilyevich Petrenko, English transcription Viktor Petrenko, . Born June 17, 1969 in Odessa ) is a retired Ukrainian figure skater, the first for the Soviet Union, according to their decay for the United Team and finally launched for Ukraine in a single run. He is the 1992 Olympic champion, world champion in 1992 and European Champion in 1990, 1991 and 1994.

Biography

Petrenko was born in Odessa was the first of two sons of the engineer couple Tamara and Vassily. His younger brother Vladimir was also figure skater and 1986 World Junior Champion. Petrenko began, on the advice of a doctor, who advised parents on the basis Wiktors poor health, to let him play sports, with five years of figure skating. When he was ten years old, he was discovered by the trainer Halyna Smijewska who trained him throughout his amateur career.

Petrenko was 1984 World Junior Champion. At the Olympic Games in Calgary in 1988, he finished in third place. 1990, 1991 and 1994 he was European champion, 1992 world champion. Highlight of his career was his victory in the 1992 Olympic Games in Albertville. His freestyle he ran to music by Thomas ( Raymond ), Chopin ( Waltz ) and Verdi ( Sicilian Vespers ).

He now acts as a technical specialist at the ISU and sits on the Executive Committee of the Ukrainian Figure Skating Federation.
