Volchansk

Volchansk (Russian Волчанск ) is a town in Sverdlovsk Oblast (Russia) with 10,010 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city lies on the eastern edge of the Ural Mountains, about 450 km north of the Oblasthauptstadt Yekaterinburg. The climate is continental.

The city Volchansk forms a separate urban district and is located about 15 km north of the city Karpinsk.

Volchansk is located on the railway line opened in 1935 ( freight only ) Serow - Krasnoturjinsk ( station Woronzowka ) - Severouralsk. The station of the city is called Lesnaya Woltschanka.

History

Since the 18th century in the area of ​​today's Woltchansk a settlement was known under the name Walt damage or Woltscha, later Lesnaja Woltschanka based on the name of the here and flowing east opens into Sos'va creek Woltschanka (adaptation of a pre- Russian name to a particular derivation from the Russian wolk for wolf).
