William O. Atkeson

William Oscar Atkeson (* August 24, 1854 in Buffalo, Putnam County, Virginia; † 16 October 1931 in Butler, Missouri ) was an American politician. Between 1921 and 1923 he represented the State of Missouri in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Born in what is now West Virginia William Atkeson attended the common schools and then studied at the University of Kentucky in Lexington. In the years 1874 and 1875 he worked as a teacher in West Virginia. At the same time, he continued his own training continued until 1875 at the Fairmont Normal School. In 1876, Atkeson moved to Point Pleasant, where he began a career in journalism. In this city he gave in 1876, the newspaper out, " West Virginia Monitor". After studying law and his 1877 was admitted to the bar he began in Council Grove (Kansas) to work in this profession. Since 1882 Atkeson lived in Missouri. Between 1882 and 1889 he was a resident of Richmond Hill; then he moved to Butler. In both places, he practiced as a lawyer. Between 1891 and 1893 he was district attorney in Bates County. In 1892, he ran unsuccessfully for the office of judge in the 29th Judicial District of Missouri. Between 1894 and 1902 acted Atkeson as publisher and editor of the newspaper " Butler Free Press ".

Politically, he was a member of the Republican Party. In the years 1906 and 1908, he ran unsuccessfully for Congress in each case. Between 1910 and 1911 he worked as a deputy hotel inspector for the government of Missouri; 1911 to 1913 he was deputy as Deputy State Labor Commissioner Labor Minister of that State. In the years 1915-1918 he moved the newspaper " Bates County Record ", whose owner he was.

In the congressional elections of 1920 was Atkeson the sixth electoral district of Missouri in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he succeeded the Democrats Clement C. Dickinson took up on March 4, 1921, he had beaten in the election. Since he lost in 1922 against Dickinson and this thus regained his position, Atkeson was able to complete only one term in Congress until March 3, 1923. In the years 1923-1925 he worked as a state warehouse commissioner in Kansas City. He then practiced as a lawyer again. He also dealt with literary matters. William Atkeson died on October 16, 1931 in Butler.
