Willie Applegarth

Willie Applegarth (actually William Reuben Applegarth; born May 11, 1890 in Guisborough, North Yorkshire, England; † December 12, 1958 in Schenectady, New York, United States) was a British sprinter and Olympic gold medalist.

Applegarth was a British AAA champion over 100 yards in 1913 and 1914, and about 220 yards from 1912 to 1914. According to the First World War, he repeated the world record of Donald Lippincott 10.6 seconds over 100 meters and placed over 200 meters a new world record with a time of 21.2 seconds. Applegarth died at the age of 68 years, exactly in the same year that his former British record was broken over 100 yards.

At the Olympic Games in Stockholm in 1912 he won the bronze medal in the 200 - meter dash, behind the two Americans Ralph Craig ( gold) and Donald Lippincott ( silver ) and the gold medal in the 4 x 100 - meter relay together with his teammates David Jacobs, Henry Macintosh and Victor d' Arcy, before the team from Sweden.
