1978–79 DDR-Oberliga (ice hockey) season

The league series was extended from 10 to 12 games for the GDR 's Ice Hockey Championship 1978/79. The defending SC Dynamo Berlin was able to repeat the superior overall victory from last year and was already at the four remaining games as old and new masters determined.

In the GDR best determine the BSG monsator Berlin won for the fourth time in a row and moved so that the number of tracks with the BSG unit Crimmitschau same.

The final tournament of the A group was held in early March 1979 in Crimmitschau, four weeks later met at the same place the teams in the B group.

As a replacement for chemical Rostock - set by a decision without a fight the relegation place - was allowed to progress, BSG Hohenstein- Ernstthal attend only out of competition at the tournament and was, accordingly, no placement assigned.

Relegation ( GDR best determination - district league )

Relegation was held in January 1980. The square of the representative of the best determination took the BSG chemistry 70 Rostock, which had withdrawn two weeks before the tournament starts and was placed at the green table on the fourth and last place. The representative from Hohenstein -Ernstthal, who started out of competition due to the missed district championship possible participation in the relegation missed. This place was taken by the BSG structure Schonheide after they have last year had waived their right to start.

The BSG Chemie 70 Rostock thus also launched in the coming season in the GDR best determination.
