1980 Winter Olympics

The XIII. Winter Olympics 1980 in Lake Placid, USA, discharged. It was already the second Winter Games in the U.S. and in Lake Placid after 1932.

Vancouver in Canada, the only other candidate for the Winter Games, pulled his application before the vote.

Sports facilities

In Reitstadion of Lake Placid ( Lake Placid Equestrian Stadium ), the opening ceremony was held.

In the Olympic Center (later renamed Herb Brooks Arena), as already found in the Games in 1932 - the Hockey Games instead.

The Alpine ski competitions were carried out the bobsled and luge disciplines on the Olympic bobsleigh run Mt Van Hoevenberg in Whiteface Mountain.

Mascot

The mascot of the games were " Roni " and " Ronny ", two raccoons. The rings on the face of raccoons, reminiscent of the goggles and masks that are worn by many winter sports athletes during a competition.

Highlights

  • Playing at home, the ice hockey team of the United States won a totally unexpected gold medal. A sensational victory over the USSR ( Miracle on Ice) made ​​this possible.

  • Eric Heiden (USA) won all five speed skating competitions, but he broke the Olympic record in each case, on the 10,000 - meter course also the world record.

A total of 1121 athletes from 37 countries participated in the competitions. These were 140 less than it was at the Games in Innsbruck.

As with the previous two Winter Games, no athlete participated from Africa. For the first time, Cyprus has participated; for Costa Rica and the People's Republic of China, it was the debut at the Winter Olympics.
