1997 IAAF World Cross Country Championships

The 25th IAAF World Cross Country Championships IAAF were held in Turin ( Italy) on 23 March 1997.

The competition site was the Parco del Valentino, where a circular course of 1911 m was prepared. The start was in each case in the north of the park at the Fontana Luminosa, the destination on the crossroads of Via Crivelli with the Viale Virgilio next to the Medieval Castle. The men started about 12.333 km, the women 6.6 km, the juniors about 8.511 km and junior women over 4.689 km. 15,000 spectators watched the events.

The favorites in the men were the defending champions Paul Tergat and last year's runner Salah Hissou. At the 10,000 - meter race of the 1996 Olympic Games Tergat had won Silver and Bronze Hissou, and shortly thereafter Hissou had set the then world record over this distance. The race was long dominated by Tom Nyariki, who led nearly nine miles long, at times, with a distance of 50 m. In the last two kilometers attacked Hissou, Nyariki caught up and shook all Kenyan pursuers until Tergat, who eventually won with two seconds ahead of his third title in a row.

Likewise, nearly ran out of the women's race. At the beginning of the third and final round, a group of five had formed, from which finally put down the defending champion Gete Wami. Paula Radcliffe followed her and took over 300 m before the finish the lead, but was eventually überspurtet of Derartu Tulu, which was after 1995 World Cross Country champion for the second time.
