1998 IAAF World Cross Country Championships

The 26th IAAF World Cross Country Championships IAAF took place in Marrakech ( Morocco) on 21 and 22 March 1998. Venue was the olives grove Ghabat Chabab near the Menara Gardens. For the first time were short- distance events for the adults to the program. For the winners of the adult race 40,000 dollars in prize money were exposed.

Detracted from the event by the travel ban on the Israeli team that was in spite of the written guarantees that the Moroccan government had given the time of application, imposed.

Course

The course consisted of a small loop of 1415 m and a wide of 2000 m. In all competitions first, a start line and a small loop was completed. Then when the men were five, large, and to cope with the women and juniors three in the Junior Women as well as the short-distance competitions of men and women a large loop. Overall, the men's 12 km, women and juniors 8 km, the juniors and the Kurzstreckler laid back 4 km away. The substrate consisted of naturally grown grass and was, apart from four ramps, flat and without obstacles.

Competitions

The race of the juniors, the short- distance races of men and the long distance races of women found on March 21 instead of the other three races the following day.

In the short-distance race of men was the big favorite of the 3,000 m world record holder and 5000 m world champion Daniel Komen. The race, however, was determined by previously that had emerged solely as a middle-distance runner John Kemboi Kibowen who could fend off the attacks of Komen and with three seconds ahead won ahead of this. The next three places were occupied by Kenyans.

For the long haul, the local hero and silver medal winner of the two previous Salah Hissou had to cancel due to an injury in the short term. Paul Tergat sat down at the start of the final lap with the Kenyan Cross Country champion Paul Koech to the top and won by a furious final commencement his fourth title in a row.

In the long distance races of women lacked the defending champion Derartu Tulu. The last year's runner Paula Radcliffe sat down on the fourth mile to the top and made for a fast pace, which in the last round could only Sonia O'Sullivan withstand. 500 m before the finish O'Sullivan took the lead and became the first Irish World Cross Country Champion.

The following day, Sonia O'Sullivan completed her triumph with a comfortable victory over the short distance. With a fourth Anita Weyermann scored the best finish by a Swiss in World Cross Country Championships at all.

In the juniors last year's runner Million Wolde, which should be two years later than 5000 m Olympic champion won.
