1999 Copa América

The Copa America 1999 was the 39th playout the South American continental championship in football and was held from June 29 to July 18 for the first time in Paraguay instead. As for the tournament in 1993 again took part in two non- South American visiting teams. These were with Japan for the first time a team from Asia and Mexico for the fourth time. Unlike the other teams, played a junior selection for Uruguay.

On discharge mode, nothing changed. It was played in a combination of group stage and subsequent knockout round. The group stage was played in three groups of four teams each. The quarter-finals reached the top two teams in each group and the two best third-placed teams. In case of equal goal difference decided. In the final round, there were at undecided after 90 minutes if no extension, but equal to a penalty shootout. Defending champions Brazil had as usual been competing in the group stage. Brazil defended his title in 1997, winning all his six games and thus to the total sixth Copa América. With this victory, Brazil was qualified as a representative of South America for the FIFA Confederations Cup 2001.
