Bouillargues

Bouillargues is a commune with 6183 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Gard of the Languedoc -Roussillon region.

Geography

The municipality is located 7.6 km from the center of Nîmes, 54 km from Avignon and 59 km from Montpellier. Two major transport axes, the N113 and D135 intersect in Bouillargues.

History

During the Wars of Religion in the 16th century, the village changed hands several times. On October 12, 1572 Catholics fought back after the Calvinists had gained more and more influence in the region. The church was destroyed in 1654 and rebuilt. At the same time built the Huguenots, who so even half of the population, a house of God. On 22 December 1663 demolition was ordered. 1757 was the Baron of Beaucaire ruler of the village. On March 15, 1790, the village officially received the status of a municipality. The hamlet Garons, Caissargues and Rodilhan were connected to her. 1836 Garons became independent in 1904 followed Caissargues. Rodilhan was isolated in 1961 by Bouillargues. The community is an important grain producer.

Madeleine Bres, the first French doctor, was born in 1842 in Bouillargues.
