History

The earliest traces of human life are the paintings in the cave Bayol that are almost 20,000 years old. The name of the place goes back to Roman times. He was discovered on a stele dating from the 2nd century in the former Roman temple which later became a hermitage. This chapel, which bears the name Notre Dame de Laval, was recently restored. In addition, there was during the Roman period, the oppidum La Castre, from which one could overlook the river Gardon. In the Middle Ages the castle was Castellas and also the village had protective walls that today, however, no longer exist. As the place in the 16th century was part of the reign of Montpezat, he appeared on maps under the name Montpezat- les- Uzes. During the religious wars of the followers of the Catholic Holy League in 1588 had to capitulate. Until the mid-19th century the village was an important center of silk production. 1833, the suspension bridge was opened over the Gardon.
