Pougnadoresse

Pougnadoresse ( Occitan Pinhadorèissa ) is a commune of 226 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011 ) in the department of Gard in the Languedoc- Roussillon region.

Geography

Pougnadoresse located 31 kilometers northeast of Nîmes and as far north-west of Avignon. The nearest large towns are about 12 miles away respectively cities of Uzès in the southwest and Bagnols -sur -Cèze in the Northeast. To the east of the town, the Rhone Valley, while to the west begins the mountains of the Cevennes. The Gemeindebiet is traversed by the Tave and the streams Valette and Veyre. The municipality is an official member of the Cotes du Rhone wine region and is marked accordingly by the wine cultivation. In addition to the nucleus, the parish includes the hamlet of Mas Carrière. The latter belongs to a part of the area which is covered by loess, while another part of hills and rocky terrain is characterized.

The neighboring communities of Pougnadoresse are Cavillargues in the north, Le Pin in the east, La Capelle- et- Masmolène and Vallabrix in the south and La Bastide- d'Engras in the West.

Infrastructure

The connection to the road network consists of Pougnadoresse only on local roads to the neighboring towns, and in the few kilometers northern Cavillargues connection consists of a regional transport corridor to Bagnols -sur -Cèze and the Rhone Valley, which binds in a westerly direction to a road to Ales.

Culture and history

Place name

The first mention of the place with the associated lock was made in 1156 under the name of Castrum de Pugnaduritia. At that time it was a possession of the Bishops of Uzès. As a possible explanation for the origin of the name is considered the Latin word Pugnator, the warrior means in combination with the suffix ICIA. The formerly widespread name variation Pignadouresso can, however, include more on a different meaning. It could either be a derivative of Occitan word penna for rocks, which could be due to the sometimes rocky environment.

Structures

The feudal castle of Pougnadoresse, whose existence is attested since 1156, has particularly stable outer walls with up to two meters in thickness. Together with the village it first belonged to the Bishops of Uzès, then partly before it passed the Lords of Sernhac and partly a local nobleman 1550 in the possession of the Le Chantre family and remained there for many years. 1780 took over the family de Sorbier domination, could at least the castle on the French Revolution also keep and represents today the owner dar.

Until 1678 presented the Catholic Church Saint Jean d' Orgerolles which still exists today, the only religious building in the community dar. Demographics

In 1793 the village was inhabited by 253 people and they subsequently experienced a significant increase up to 384 residents in 1861. Was followed by a sharp decline, so that in 1906, 255 inhabitants registered the old level was reached again. The number continued to fall rapidly, reaching its lowest point in 1982 with 123, which was followed by a period of strong recovery of the population levels.
