Gallargues-le-Montueux

Gallargues -le- Montueux is a commune with 3351 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011 ) in the department of Gard in the Languedoc- Roussillon region.

Geography

The place Gallargues located in the hills above a fertile plain watered by Vidourle. The community is located between the towns of Nimes and Montpellier, at A9, for which there is a connection point in Gallargues.

The neighboring communities of Gallargues -le- Montueux are Aubais in the north, Aigues -Vives in the east, the south and Lunel Aimargues and Villetelle in the West. The limits to Lunel and Villetelle form at the same time the border to the Hérault.

History and Culture

The area has been inhabited since ancient times, but gained only through the construction of the Roman Via Domitia importance. As still visible remnant of this important Roman road found in Gallargues the Pont Ambroix, a bridge from the 1st century. In 1027 the ruler of Gallargues founded a monastery in the town. The church Saint -Martin was the only place in the 12th century, his first church, although the associated cemetery existed since the 8th century. As early as the Middle Ages drew Gallargues as part of the Camino numerous pilgrims, followed to this day nothing has changed. In the 13th century it fell into the dominion of the French king. However, under Philip IV the citizens gained some self-government rights. During the Wars of Religion, the majority of the population joined the Protestantism. 1575 and 1628 Gallargues became the scene of battles.
