History

Since the early history of the area by hunters, gatherers and fishermen was settled. During Roman times it was used to supply the city of Nimes in agricultural products. Many Roman villas were scattered here. Later Marguerittes was a small fortified village with a castle. Maybe the village grew out of a villa called Virgelosa, which developed the present name over time. Probably the village was near the aqueduct from Uzès to Nîmes, which led via the famous Pont du Gard. Apparently there was another small aqueduct, the water from Nîmes brought back to the supply of a Roman villa.
