Civita Castellana

Civita Castellana is a town with 16,560 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012) in the province of Viterbo in the Italian region of Lazio. It is the seat of a Roman Catholic diocese.

Geography

Civita Castellana is located 56 km north of Rome and 36 km southeast of Viterbo. The municipal area extends from the Tiber to the volcanic hills of the foothills of the Monti Cimini. The old town is situated on a rocky plateau, which lies above the deep valleys of the Rio Maggiore and the Rio Filetto, shortly before they open into the Treja.

The municipality consists of the villages of quarters Catalano, Paolelli, Sassacci and Borghetto.

The nearby towns of Castel Sant'Elia are, Colle Vecchio (RI ), Corchiano, Fabrica di Roma, Faleria, Gallese, Magliano Sabina (RI ), Ponzano Romano (RM ), Sant'Oreste (RM ).

Traffic

Civita Castellana is located 11 km from the exit Magliano Sabino on the A1 Autostrada del Sole motorway. The Strada Statale Flaminia 3 leads east of the center by the districts Sassacci and Borghetto.

It has a railway station in the district Borghetto on the railway line Florence-Rome. On the railway line Roma - Viterbo Flaminio are the stations Catalano, Civita Castellana and Pian Paradiso.

History

Civita Castellana built on the site of the old Falerii Veteres, the capital of Faliscans, a tribe, who belonged to the Etruscan league against Rome.

Attractions

  • The Forte Sangallo Antonio da Sangallo for Pope Alexander VI. built. In it, the Museo dell'Agro Falisco is housed ironclad Faliscans since 1977.
  • The Santa Maria Maggiore Cathedral is famous for its Kosmatenarbeiten.

Policy

Gianluca Angelelli (PD ) was elected in June 2009 for the mayor. His center-left alliance also with 13 of 20 seats, the majority in the City Council. He solved Massimo Giampieri ( PdL ) (since 1999 ), who did not run.
