Colombier, Vaud

Colombier (VD ) ( [ kɔlɔbje ], in the local Provençal dialect [(a) kɔlɔbi ː ] ) was until June 30, 2011, a municipality in the district of Morges in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland. Since July 1, Colombier is fused together with Monnaz and Saint- Saphorin- sur- Morges community Echichens.

Geography

Colombier is located at 517 m above sea level. M., 5.5 km north- west of the district capital Morges ( straight line ). The farming village stretches along a sloping hillside above the valley to the southeast of the Senoge, in the southwest of Gros de Vaud, in the Vaud Mittelland.

The area of ​​5.3 km ² large municipality area includes a portion of the gently undulating plateau of Gros de Vaud, the granary of Vaud Mittelland. The area of Colombier is occupied by the valley of the upper Senoge, which flows in an arc around the hill on which the village is situated. To the north of the municipality extends to the bottom of the hill En Ombre (570 m above sea level. M. ) and in the southeast to the height of Saint- Saphorin- sur -Morges (up to 525 m above sea level. M. ). The western boundary generally forms the stream of Morges. Below belonging to Apple's settlement En Lèvremont is at 580m above sea level. M. reached the highest point of Colombier. From the municipality surface 1997 accounted for 5% on settlements, 10 % of forest and shrubs, 84 % to agriculture and slightly less than 1% was unproductive land.

To Colombier include the farm cluster Forel ( 542 m above sea level. M. ) on the top Morges and several individual farms. Prior to the merger were the neighboring parishes of Colombier Vuillerens, Saint- Saphorin- sur- Morges, Monnaz, Vaux- sur- Morges, Clarmont, Apples, Sévery and Cottens.

Population

With 522 inhabitants ( 31 December 2010) Colombier is one of the small communities of the Canton of Vaud. Of the 92.1 % inhabitants are French-speaking, German-speaking 5.7 % and 0.7 % in English (as of 2000). The population of Colombier in 1850 amounted to 363 inhabitants, 1900 to 375 inhabitants. After the population had decreased to 251 to 1970 inhabitants, a significant population increase was recorded with a doubling of the population within 30 years.

Economy

Colombier was until the mid-20th century, a predominantly coined by agriculture village. Even today, agriculture has an important role in the economic structure of the population. In the area of the village there are several small wine-growing regions. More jobs are in small local manufacturing and services available. In recent decades, the village has developed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work mainly in Morges and Lausanne.

Traffic

History

The first documentary mention of the place was already in the year 937 under the name Columbaris. Later, the names Colonberio ( 987 ) Columberium (1005 ), Columbie ( 1228 ) published; In the 19th century the spelling Collombier was used. The place name comes from the Latin word columbarium ( dovecote ).

In the Middle Ages Colombier belonged to the lords of Vuillerens which were subject to the Barony Cossonay. From the 13th to the 16th centuries Colombier formed its own rule. With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536, the village came under the administration of the bailiwick of Morges. After the collapse of the ancien régime Colombier belonged from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic to the canton of Geneva, who came up then with the enactment of the Act of Mediation in the canton of Vaud. 1798 was assigned to the District Morges 1803 and received the status of a district chief town.

Attractions

The previously mentioned 1228 parish church of Saint -Martin dates back in its present form from the 15th century. In the late Gothic style forms ( 1500) the choir arch and the southern side chapel Saint -Jean -Baptiste are held. From the former castle of the nobles of Colombier no more residues are visible. In 1500, a new castle was built, which was changed several times in the 17th and 18th centuries. From the original building, a seven square stair tower, the portal and a fresco of Pope Felix V are obtained. The City Council of Colombier dates from 1801, the school house from 1841, and the Collège d'en haut was built in 1877. In the old town there are some characteristic farmhouses from the 18th and 19th centuries.
