Derek Mills

Derek Mills ( born July 9, 1972 in Washington, DC) is an American athlete who was active in the early 1990s. He won three gold medals as a member of the 4 x 400 - meter relay team of his country.

He had in 1990, when he was a starter for the U.S. team won gold over 4 meters by 400 meters at the Junior World Championships in the Bulgarian city of Plovdiv his first international appearance. In single race over 400 meters, he finished fifth.

The following years were not very successful for Derek Mills. As a sixth of the trials he had to stay away from the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona. In 1993, he took while as relay runners at the World Championships in Stuttgart, but denied only the prelims. Only in 1994 did he again take notice when he won in 45.96 s at the high school championships. At the U.S. Championships, although he missed the final, but scored in a European tour seven times under 45 seconds. He won the final of the Grand Prix in Paris in 44.22 s ahead of his countryman Antonio Pettigrew as well as world-class Zurich.

In 1995, he was victorious at the New York Games in 44.86 s and at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene in the personal best of 44.13 s before Darnell Hall and Butch Reynolds. However, since he could s place in the subsequent U.S. Championships despite excellent 44.58 only fourth, he was nominated only as a relay team for the World Championships in Gothenburg. Running in second position, he won his second gold medal.

At the Olympic Games in Atlanta in 1996, he was also as individual runners not at the start, but came again in the season and won - this time in third position constantly - his third relay gold.

At the end of his career, he won the U.S. indoor championship in 1997. He can not win apart from the high school championship in 1994 an outdoor individual titles.

Derek Mills graduated from DeMatha Catholic High School in Hyattsville, and Georgia Tech, where he was trained by Grover Hinsdale. Today, he works at Tulane University in New Orleans as assistant coach. He is 1.75 m tall and weighed 72 kg in his playing days.
