Gavere is a Belgian municipality located in the Flemish region with 12,529 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2012). It lies on the banks of the Scheldt between Ghent and Oudenaarde.

History

  • Gavere is known for the Battle of Gavere, which was in 1453 fought the good and the rebellious people of Ghent between the Duke of Burgundy Philip, sitting over against high taxes to fight back.
  • In Boechaute, a hamlet to Dikkelvenne, the oldest complete Dutch-language document was found. In the so-called aldermen letter ( Schepenbank letter ) is a notarial acts from the 13th century.
  • Charles V brought the country from Gavere in the 16th century to a principality. Lamoraal van Egmont was the first prince.

Geography

Oudenaarde is located 9 kilometers south, 13 kilometers north of Ghent, Aalst 27 km east, 28 km southwest of Kortrijk and Brussels about 50 km to the east. The municipality borders the following municipalities or Gavere boroughs: a Melsen ( Merelbeke ), b. Schelderode ( Merelbeke ), c. Munter ( Merelbeke ), d Scheldewindeke ( Oosterzele ), e - Velzeke Ruddershove ( Zottegem ), f Dikkele ( Zwalm ), g Beerlegem ( Zwalm ), h Meilegem, i Nederzwalm - Hermelgem, j. Zingem, k Huise ( Zingem ), l Ouwegem ( Zingem ), m. Nazareth, n Eke ( Nazareth ), o Zevergem ( De Pinte )

Community structure

Gavere consists of six sub- communities. Asper is separated by the Scheldt from the rest of the community. By road building are Dikkelvenne, Gavere, Semmerzake and grown Vurste each other to a lesser extent.

In addition, there are two hamlets, Heedwijk and Sint- Janswijk.

Asper

At the height of Asper is a lock on the Scheldt, begun at the 2007 works and a new ride race was dug. By 2010, all work should be completed. This Asper is one of the few places which are separated by an intervention in the natural environment of its main church.

Direction Zingem - Steenweg 1 - is the former workhouse. It was donated in 1863 by Sabrina De Groote, who had since 1836 Widow of P. Fr De Bock. It was originally directed by laymen, to be later taken from Nederbrakel by the clerics from the Heilig Hart van Maria.

Until 1927 it was serving as a retirement home. After that it became the property of the OCMW and is regularly used as an exhibition space of IERMA ( Ideas & Expressions of Real Modern Art ). Edmond de Perre - Montigny was the architect. On the front facade there is a memorial stone with the text admit ot door Juffrouw Sabina De Groote, van Huisvrouw D' heer P. FR. De Bock, stuff te Asper the 30 april 1836. Asper in the building known as the Hof van de gebroeders Vandenberghe, a former owner of the building.

Semmerzake

In the borough of Semmerzake the military aviation control center is housed, which plays an important role in military aviation control of NATO.

Vurste

Vurste lies on the border between Sandy and Sandlehmig Flanders, on the Scheldt. The local St. Martin's Church dated the origin from the 14th to 15th centuries, was to the 19th century further enlarged in the 16th and rebuilt between 2000 and 2006. The church has a pointed rectangular tower. The baroque castle Borgwal is empty and falling into the landscape, but are on the heavily walled domain, the new building of the Broeders van Liefde committed to the care of the mentally handicapped.

Parish and Church of Dikkelvenne are named after Saint Peter. The old church collapsed in 1824 and was dying down completely. She stood in " De Rotse " not too far from the Scheldt, where now a chapel and fountain in honor of the Holy Christiana are. A new St. Oetruskirche was consecrated in 1826. After bombardment in World War I in 1920 restoration measures were carried out. Worth seeing is the Tarandusmühle is located on the border with Beerlegem.

Baaigem

Baaigem has only 565 inhabitants and is the smallest part of town Gavere.

Traffic

The next highway exits are located at Deinze and Kruishoutem in the West and De Pinte in the north on the A14 / E 17 and in Wetteren on the east by the A10 / E 40

The community has a regional station on the railway line Oudenaarde - Gavere - Ghent.

Others

In the Tour of Flanders 2007 Gavere was a station in the round. Bürgemeester Hugo Leroy in 2009 had a controversial appearance on the VRT broadcast Man Bijt Hond, who saw in the national press for attention.
