Haaltert is a Belgian municipality in the Denderstreek in the Flanders region with 17,709 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2012). It consists of the nucleus and the hamlets Denderhoutem, Heldergem and Kerksken.
The Molenbeek- Ter Erpenbeek runs through Heldergem, Kerksken and Haaltert.
Aalst is 5 kilometers north, Brussels 25 km southwest of Ghent and 25 km north- west.
The nearest motorway exit is located in Aalst at the A10 / E 40 Haaltert has a regional railway station on the railway line Kortrijk - Oudenaarde - Zottegem - Haaltert - Brussels, others are located in Aalst and Denderleeuw.
Furthermore, there is a 205 hectare nature reserve: the yolk in the boroughs Aaigem (municipality Erpe -Mere ) and Heldergem (municipality Haaltert ).
History
The districts Haaltert, Heldergem and Kerksken belonged in former times the Heerlijkheid van Latem s Lilaer ( glory of Latem and Lilaer ). Other places that glory were Aspelare, Aaigem, Sint -ante links and Woubrechtegem.
