Keldrimäe

Keldrimäe ( German for "Keller Mountain" ) is a district (Estonian asum ) of the Estonian capital Tallinn. It is located in the district Kesklinn ( "downtown" ).

Description

Keldrimäe has 4,445 inhabitants (as of 1 May 2010). The municipality is largely influenced by Soviet residential buildings. In addition, in the 1950s some more representative buildings were constructed in the style of socialist classicism.

In Keldrimäe is also the Tallinn Central Market ( Tallinna Keskturg ), are offered for sale on the mainly fruits and vegetables.

Church of the Kazan Mother of God

Opposite the hotel is the small Olümpia Orthodox "Church of Our Lady of Kazan " (Estonian Kaasani Jumalaema Sünni Kirik ). It was built after the conquest of Estonia by the Tsar in 1721 as a Russian garrison church on the outskirts of that city, and in 1749 moved to its present location. The church is the oldest wooden religious building, which has been preserved in Tallinn.

The interior is decorated in the style of classicism in the 19th century. Him complement cabinets icon in the Empire style. The iconostasis has baroque features. The oldest icons date from the 17th and 18th centuries.

Plaques recall the Russian fell during the wars against Napoleon (1812 ) and against Japan (1904 /05).
