La Réole

La Réole ( Gascon La Reula or L' Arrèula ) is a small town with 4178 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) in the Gironde department in Aquitaine region of France. It is the capital of the canton of the same name and a member of the Communauté de communes du Réolais. Residents Réolais call themselves.

Geography

La Réole lies on the Garonne, 62 kilometers south-east of Bordeaux and 19 kilometers east of Langon, 6 km west of the border of the department of Lot- et- Garonne. The main part of the small town is situated on the mountain slope of the right bank, the Rouergue hamlet lies on the left bank. Especially for Rouergue is after storms flood risk through the Garonne. In the years 1835, 1855, 1875, 1879, 1918, 1927, 1930, 1981, 2006 and 2009 led the Garonne flood.

History

The town's name was derived from Rule of St. Benedict. Around the year 977 the settlement of the Benedictine abbey of Fleury was assigned.

1793 was La Réole as La Réole Saint Aignan in the wake of the French Revolution ( 1789-1799 ) the status of a municipality and 1801 under the current name, the right to local self-government.

From February 17 1800 to September 10, 1926 existed the Arrondissement de La Réole, the Monségur, Pellegrue, La Réole, Saint- Macaire, Sauveterre -de- Guyenne and Targon included. La Réole was the main town. The entire district was passed on to the district Langon.

Most residents had La Réole 1793 (5035), at least 1921 ( 3644 ).

Culture and sights

Structures

The former Benedictine priory of Saint- Pierre is officially classified as a historical monument. It was built in 1704 and is owned by the community and the department.

Sports

La Réole XIII is a member of the French "three orders of Rugby League ".

Infrastructure

La Réole is passed by the Via Lemovicensis.

The town has its own railway station on the line Bordeaux - Sète SNCF. This route is served by trains of the TER Aquitaine.

A motorway junction is located on the A62 Autoroute.

  • The mathematician Abbo of Fleury died on November 13, 1004 in La Réole.
  • The military Olivier de Coëtivy 1447 was captain of La Réole.
  • The theologian Bernard Seguin, who died on 16 May 1553 as a Protestant martyr Lyon, was born in La Réole.
  • The statesman Henri Joseph Joachim Lainé was appointed in 1793 to the District Administrator of La Réole.
