Lasnamäe

Lasnamäe is a district in the northeast of the Estonian capital Tallinn, about 5 km from the center.

Location

Lasnamäe is on the Lasnamägi ( German Laaksberg ), a Klint limestone overlooking the Baltic Sea. The first settlement of the area could be detected for the period of Corded Ware.

Architecture

Between 1976 and 1991 a large housing estate in the Soviet style emerged in Lasnamäe. The approximately 650 houses are 5 - to 16- storeys. Lasnamäe was designed as a model settlement for 200,000 people with all the conveniences of the time. Parts of the infrastructure and recreational facilities, however, remained stuck in the planning phase. For example, was the as the main connection to the city center planned tram line never built, and shares the six tracks of the originally planned as an extension of the highway between Tallinn and St Petersburg Laagna Street, which Lasnamäe into two halves, running in Priisle in all of two tracks. For several years, however, the settlement is carried on the balance; so the Pae - park was, for example, in November 2009 inaugurated as the greening of a disused quarry, and the continuation of work on the tram line to be resumed in the foreseeable future.

Population

Lasnamäe today, with an area of 30 km ², the largest and most populous district of Tallinn. 108 042 people live in it (as at 31 December 2011), slightly less than one-eleventh of the Estonian population. The population density is 2678 inhabitants per km ². The majority of the population ( 70.8 %) is Russian-speaking and only 25.8 % have Estonian according to the last census as mother tongue.

Townships

The district Lasnamäe is divided into 16 districts: Katleri, Kurepõllu, Kuristiku, Laagna Loopealse, Mustakivi, Pae, Paevälja, Priisle, Seli, Sikupilli, Sõjamäe, Tondiraba, Ülemiste, Uuslinn and Väo.

Social structure

Politically dominated Lasnamäe for years, the Centre Party. The district is the constituency of the incumbent Mayor Edgar Savisaar.

The football club FC Ajax Lasnamäe plays in the Estonian Football League. Home stadium is the FC Ajaxi Staadion with a capacity of 1,500 visitors.
