History

Lehigh Acres was founded in 1954 on the basis of the Lucky Lee Ranch. First, there were mostly retirees, who settled here later, many families were middle-income, due to the employment opportunities in Fort Myers and surrounding it. Many German have acquired a second home in the last twenty years here. The settlement area was until recently one of the fastest growing communities in Florida. Due to the financial crisis and the weak dollar, housing prices fell by up to 50 % of its original value. There is a trend since 2008 for forced homework and thus considerable vacancy, which has led some of them already to vandalism and neglect. The inhabitants are now beginning to organize themselves into groups of citizens to oppose the further deterioration of their residence.

To get out of the low house price misery again, the local Chamber of Commerce will apply for Lehigh Acres city rights in order to obtain greater autonomy in planning anticipated new upswing.
