Orthodox churches

The Orthodox Churches are also called Church of the Seven Councils. It is legally independent, but related full communion churches with common, at the seven ecumenical councils between the first and the second Council of Nicaea defined theology and liturgy is essentially common, but different languages:

Oriental Orthodox

The Miaphysites are also called churches of the three councils or as a pre- or non- chalzedonische churches ( as they acknowledge the Council of Ephesus as the last council, but no longer the Council of Chalcedon ). Assyrian

The Assyrian Church of the East recognizes only the first two councils of Christianity, namely, the First Council of Nicaea and the First Council of Constantinople Opel, and is therefore also called the Church of the two councils. It is often referred to as the Nestorian Church, however, rejects this name as a self-designation from today.

Catholic churches

Roman Catholic Church

As the universal Church they referred to themselves as " Catholic Church" and consists of a series of particular churches, each with its own traditions in worship, church order, theology and piety. The common feature is the recognition of the Bishop of Rome, the Pope, as Vicar of Christ equipped with special priority ( primacy of jurisdiction ). The largest and most important part of church is the Latin Church, that the Roman Catholic Church in the strict sense, which as Metropolitan of Rome also headed by the Pope immediately. Helped to shape this part of the church is the Roman Rite, which determines the liturgical full trains. Then there are the so-called Eastern Catholic Churches which are united with Rome churches that have their own rites while recognizing the papal primacy own church order and usually (see below).   • Rite Bracarensis: a variant of the Roman Rite in the Archdiocese of Braga (Portugal )

More recently, some special regional developments, which also include an independent, well-kept within the Latin Church liturgical rite:

  • Rite zaïrois: since 1988 officially recognized special form of the Roman Rite in the Democratic Republic of Congo
  • Anglican Use: Anglican traditions committed Catholic liturgy in the USA ( Book of Divine Worship ).

Catholic Eastern Churches

Part of the Eastern Church believers recognizes the primacy of jurisdiction of the Pope. These form the Eastern Catholic Churches. If they were previously separated from Rome and came only through a union with the Roman Catholic Church, they are called Uniate churches. The Eastern Catholic Churches in turn belong to different rites of the Eastern Church and have their own canon law, some common to all the Eastern Churches united with Rome ( the Codex Canonum Ecclesiarum Orientalium, abbreviation CCEO ), partly particularity of individual Eastern Churches.

Independent Catholic Churches

The group of independent Catholic churches are the Anglican churches and the Old Catholic Churches that are in full communion with each other since 1931.

Anglican churches

The Anglican churches are members of the Anglican Communion. These include:

  • Church of England, which is organized as a single as the state church in England part of the country of the United Kingdom

Other denominations in Catholic tradition
