Luc Van Lierde

Luc Van Lierde ( born April 14, 1969 in Bruges ) is a Belgian triathlete, two -time World Champion on the long distance (1997, 1998) and two-time Ironman World Champion (1996 and 1999).

Career

He starts since 1990 in international triathlon competitions and specializes in long distances such as the Ironman. In 1996 he won the age of 27 became the first European in his Ironman debut the World Championship in Hawaii for himself and beat the previous course record with a time of 8:04:08 hours by more than three minutes. In 1997 and 1998 he was Triathlon World Champion on the long distance.

Van Lierde held for 14 years with 7:50:27 hours the world record at the Ironman distance. In 1997, he overcame this route at Ironman Europe in Roth. For the 3.86 km swim, 180.2 km cycling and 42.195 km running he needed 0:44:51, 4:28:47 and 2:36:49 hours. It was not until 3 July 2011 at the Ironman Austria Marino Vanhoencker in 7:45:58 hours and already 10 July 2011 again by Andreas Raelert during his victory in the Challenge Roth with 7:41:33 hours (current world record ) undercut. The running time for the marathon represents the valid to date course record at the Ironman distance in Roth (now Challenge Roth) dar.

In 1997 and again in 1999 he was elected to Belgium "Sportsman of the Year".

His winning time from Ironman Hawaii 1996 stayed for 15 years as fastest time - and was only undercut again in October 2011 by the Australian Craig Alexander.

He also coached the Belgian Frederik Van Lierde triathletes, with whom he is not related.
