Merivälja

Merivälja is a municipality (Estonian asum ) of the Estonian capital Tallinn. He is one of the districts of the district of Pirita. Merivälja has nearly 3,000 inhabitants ( 2008).

Location, history, architecture

Merivälja lies to the east of the Tallinn city center. The municipality borders on the Tallinn Bay. It forms the north- east, the city boundary to the rural municipality of Tallinn Viimsi.

The district was founded in 1924 by the Garden City Company Saku. Before the area was part of the grazing land of the estate Viimsi. Merivälja was after Nõmme the second garden city in the metropolitan area of Tallinn.

The homes were mostly designed in the style of functionalism. The town is still marked mainly of residential buildings near the Baltic Sea beach. 1945 Merivälja was the city of Tallinn affiliated. After the Second World War, the larger plots were divided. There were small houses, usually with high gable. In the 1980s, newer, richer decorated buildings were added in postmodernistischem style. Now even larger villas arose.
