Geography
Geographical Location
The community is a nationally recognized resort and is located in the Thuringian Forest in the Valley of Schönau, which belongs to the catchment area of the river Werra. In its upper reaches, the Oberschönau flows through, the river is often called hazel or Haselbach. The municipality belongs to the administrative community Haselgrund, which has its headquarters in the town of Viernau.
History
Oberschönau one of the younger locations in the area and was built around 1555 Canzlersmühl said cutting mill, which is occupied in the 15th century. The location of the mill was first mentioned in 1548 Öbern Schonau. 1585 is the first village testified at that point. Natural Monuments
- South of town, the 867 m high Hermann Large mountain rises to the upstream crumpled box.
- Southeast of Oberschönau is a rocky mountain lot with free standing rock towers. It is called the Twelve Apostles. The name refers to a place of worship.
Sports facilities
The ski jump in Kanzlersgrund that is often expected to town Oberhof, located partly on the territory of the municipality Oberschönau.
Churches
The Evangelical church was built in 1700-1727. The parish belongs as part of the church district Schmalkalden historical reasons an exclave of the Evangelical Church of Hesse Electorate - Waldeck.
