Formation

To survive the end of the 1980s against the threat coupe superiority of Japan, the Adam Opel AG presented under the name Opel Calibra at the IAA 1989, a sports coupe " in 2 2 interpretation " (two seats front and two rear Notplätze ) before. As of June 9, 1990, the model was at the dealership. The portmanteau "Calibration " is a creation of brand-name developer Manfred Gotta.

Design

In contrast to the manta having a longitudinally mounted engine and rear wheel drive, the front Calibration is driven, the engine is mounted transversely. The construction is based on the Opel Vectra. While the Vectra (except the Vectra 4 × 4, 2000, and Turbo ) is a simple torsion beam rear axle was used, there was a Calibra -trailing arm rear axle with mini-block springs, stabilizer bar and telescopic shock absorbers.

Outstanding was the then achieved by the design of Erhard quick low drag coefficient of 0.26, which the Calibra made for " aerodynamics world champion " among the production vehicles. The tailgate of the Calibra is similar to the Manta CC. The Calibration pointed out some stylistic characteristics, such as the only seven centimeters high front light units. Makes it were through the use of the ellipsoid headlamp in which the light exits through a lens (similar to a slide projector ). Power steering, air bags (from 1993), sports seats, tinted windows and alloy wheels were standard equipment. The base price was initially 36,900.00 DM

Facelift

In summer 1994, the Calibra received a minor facelift.

The front Opel emblem was now no longer on the hood, but in the grille, which was a slightly modified form. The characters have been changed, the interior underwent a slight revision with new upholstery, new fixtures scales ( white dials and gauges ), and bright A-, B- and C- pillar trim. Also the rims were given a new design.

In November 1994, the cost Calibra 2,0 i 40 835 DM, the Calibra 16V 43 495 DM, the Calibra V6 51 070 DM and the Calibra Turbo 54,345 DM -wheel drive was only for the Calibra Turbo available.

In June 1997 ended the production of the Calibra. A successor by an independent body, it is not until today.

Motorization

Calibration was available to the first of two different 2 -liter engines. Basic performance was the 85 kW/115 hp ( C20NE ) two-liter from the Vectra, which was also available in conjunction with an automatic transmission. The standard was a five-speed gearbox. Second engine on offer was developed by Fritz Indra 2.0 l 16 V, which produces 110 kW/150 hp ( C20XE ). This engine was the first mass-production engine of Opel with four-valve technology and dual overhead camshafts ( DOHC), if one of previous competition engines and the 2.4-liter V - 16 engines in the Opel Manta 400 Opel Ascona 400 apart. The engine was at the time of its introduction, with 37% of the gasoline engine with the highest efficiency. This has been achieved by the revolutionary then copy milling of the combustion chambers, which enables a high surface accuracy. The 16- valve engine also came in the Opel Kadett E GSi 16V, Opel Astra F GSi 16V and 16V Opel Vectra 2000 for use. The 110 kW of 16 V (up to 1994) brought the Calibra by 196 Nm of torque from 8.5 s to 100 km / h The average consumption was - thanks to the low drag coefficient - 9.2 l/100 km. Top speed was loud vehicle title at 223 km / h and that of the 2.0i model at 205 km / h Both engines are equipped with a three-way catalytic converter and the engine management Bosch Motronic.

Wheel

In the fall of 1990, the four-wheel drive Calibra 4 × 4 came on the market. He was released after early 1989 Vectra 4 × 4, the second - Opel car with all-wheel drive. Is automatically zuschaltendes system whereby, in normal loading in dry conditions, the majority of the driving force is distributed to the front wheels. Wherein slippage occurring at the front axle is fed with a viscous coupling between a torque transmission to the rear axle. During braking, a multi-plate clutch shuts off the all-wheel drive to ensure braking stability and the functioning of the anti-lock system.

The all-wheel drive was originally in conjunction with two motors ( C20NE and C20XE ) available, but not with automatic transmission. The Calibra 2,0 i 4 × 4 reaches a top speed of 200 km / h and acceleration from 0 - 100 km / h in 11 seconds, top speed of 16V is 215 km / h The base price was 44215.00 DM addition, there was at the all-wheel version of a 4 × 4 instead of Emblem Opel emblem in the steering wheel. The all-wheel drive increased consumption by about one liter per 100 km.

Calibra Turbo 4 × 4

In March 1992 came the Calibra Turbo 4 × 4 as the new flagship model to the dealers. In it, the 2.0-liter 16V engine ( C20LET ) was used, equipped with a KKK turbocharger ( K16 ) and a charge air cooler now makes 150 kW (204 hp). The turbocharger was a new development; he was not flanged, but integrated into the exhaust manifold. The turbo engine was combined as standard with a six-speed gearbox and four-wheel drive, an automatic transmission, it was not for the turbo. The maximum torque is 280 Nm, which is already at 2400 rpm. The Calibra Turbo was the fastest of its kind: Indicated had a top speed of 245 km / h and acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h in 6.8 seconds. It cost 1992 DM 49880.00

Externally it differed from the other Calibras only by 16-inch alloy wheels ( five-hole rims) in special turbo design and corresponding logos. The Calibra 16V 4 × 4 was thus detached from Calibra Turbo and consequently no longer built.

The Calibra V6 engines and the Renaissance

From model year 1993, a 24V six-cylinder engine was offered for the Calibration: The 2.5-liter V6 ( C25XE, X25XE later ), which was also available in the Vectra and Omega B, 125 kW and has a maximum torque of 227 Nm at 4200 rpm. This reached the maximum Calibra 237 km / h and accelerates in 7.8 seconds to 100 km / h V6 there were also automatic, but not with all-wheel drive.

The 2.0 16v engine ( C20XE ) was replaced in August 1993, when a newly developed and strict emission standard EURO2 adjusted 2.0 16V engine ( X20XEV ), which was now powered by 100 kW. The engine already meets the stricter D3 standard. Entry-level engine was still the 2.0 i 85 kW and EURO 1 standard ( Low-emission -E2 not to be confused with EURO2 ), for which subsequently convert to EURO2 is possible.

Safety and the Environment

As of 1993, the Calibra was built as standard with driver airbag and front passenger in August with full- size airbag. In addition to improvements in the small, which fed continuously into the program, some important safety points have been improved in August 1993. So the doors were given a double steel pipe reinforcement, there were more side sills and window pillars installed, the belt system received a buckle pretensioner, but also things that relate primarily to the environment have been improved. For painting a water-based paint technology has been developed in significantly fewer pollutants are included, and the newly developed air conditioning was now filled with CFC-free refrigerant.

Special Editions

The model year 1996 brought a new exterior color program, however, the range of engines remained unchanged. As a new entry-level model of Calibra Young added the model range. He was at first only with the 2.0 i engine and comes in four different finishes and otherwise corresponded to the Calibra - standard. He stood in January 1996 for 40 725 DM at the dealership. Other special models were the Calibra Classic with air conditioning, leather interior, Bose sound system I and sunroof ( 60.325 DM Turbo ) and the Calibra DTM Edition ( 59 775 DM Turbo). This model was particularly sporty designed with wider alloy wheels DTM-look, a lowered suspension and DTM lettering. Both special models could be ordered with all available engines.

In April 1996, the special model Calibra Cliff Motorsport Edition, with which Opel 's success with the 470 -hp Calibra in the DTM ( German Touring Car Championship) in 1994 and 1995 and in the ITC (International Touring Car Championship ) appeared celebrated in 1996. He had a modified front spoiler from Irmscher with additional air intakes, a slightly modified rear apron and side skirts painted. There were also air conditioning and a Irmscher package with BBS alloy wheels in 16 inch and a 30 mm deeper sports suspension. Clearly visible was this model the Cliff emblems with which the DTM and ITC Calibras were also provided. With the end of the model year 1996 ended the production of the Calibra turbo and thus also of the all-wheel drive in the Calibra as an adaptation of the engine to new emissions regulations would have been too costly. The 2.0 i engine with 85 kW ( 115 hp) also accounted for.

As of August 1996, the Calibra was ordered only in the equipment Young, Cliff Motorsport Edition and Classic, with only the Calibra Young could be ordered from January 1997.

The last limited edition copies with the name Calibra Last Edition could roll to the new owners as of March 1997. Available for 2.0 - 16V and the revised 2.5 -liter V6 engine were ( X25XE with better emission standard ), which could be ordered in both models. The equipment load Edition corresponded to the rich combination of variants Cliff Motorsport Edition and Classic. The prices ranged from 41 415 DM ( Calibra 2.0 16V Young ) and 55,800 DM ( Calibra Last Edition 2.5 V6).
