Palazzolo sull'Oglio

Palazzolo sull'Oglio is a northern Italian municipality ( comune ) with 19,770 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012) in the province of Brescia, in Lombardy. The community is located halfway, about 20 kilometers southeast of Bergamo and 25 kilometers west-northwest of Brescia. The municipality borders the province of Bergamo. The village lies on the edge of the Parco dell'Oglio ( North) and the middle of the plain of Brescia.

History

First mentioned the place is named after Christ Palazzolo 830. The strategic location on a river ford of the Oglio likely to have had the establishment of a lordly mansion result. Even in Roman times, a bridge was detected. Here, the road led from Brixia (modern Brescia ) to Mediolanum (modern Milan ).

In the time of fall documentary mention also the remains of a chapel or church plant, which were uncovered in the 1970s and in the 7th - 9th Century are dated. In the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, the place was partly the Republic of Venice, and later under the rule of the Habsburg Empire and under Napoleonic rule. In the 19th century, it is a center of the lime and cement industry developed. Finally, also settled in the textile industry. Town charter, the municipality since 1954.

Traffic

Through the municipal area the Autostrada A4 leads from Bergamo to Brescia and Turin to Venice / Trieste. The Strada Statale 573 and State Road 469 cross each other in place. At the railway network Palazzolo sull'Oglio is connected via the rail route Bergamo -Brescia with a train station. Another non- electrified line leads to the Lago d' Iseo to Paratico and now serves as a museum railway.

The asteroid ( 6793 ) Palazzolo is named after the place.
