Porto Venere
Porto Venere is a town belonging to the region of Liguria Province of La Spezia in Italy. It has an area of 7 km ² and 3637 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012).
Location
Porto Venere is located in eastern Liguria on the Ligurian Sea. The place is located about 12 km south of La Spezia at the head of a promontory which bounds the Gulf of La Spezia in the West. The municipality consists of the islands of the promontory of Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto. In the area of Porto Venere and the island of Palmaria is the rock deposits of the exclusive gold-colored natural stone Nero Portoro.
History
In the year 50 BC Porto Venere was founded as Portus Veneris Stabo. From the 12th century until the 17th century, a fortress was built during the reign of Genoa.
Several refugee ships were during the flight and illegal immigration of European Jews to Palestine 1945-1948 in Porto Venere rebuilt to accommodate large numbers of passengers, including the United Nations and the Exodus.
1997 Porto Venere was explained together with the north-west Cinque Terre a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Attractions
Among the main attractions Porto Venere which towers over the village fortress and the churches of San Pietro include (1256-1277 built ) and San Lorenzo (1116-1494 built ).
