Province of Messina

The Messina (Italian Provincia di Messina) Province is one of the nine provinces of the Autonomous Region of Sicily of the Republic of Italy. Capital is Messina.

General

The Messina province occupies the northeastern part of Sicily. It is bordered on the south by the Catania province and the province of Enna, in the west by the province of Palermo, on the north by the Tyrrhenian Sea and on the east by the Ionian Sea and the Strait of Messina, which separates Sicily from the continent.

The province is divided into 108 municipalities, including the municipalities of the Aeolian Islands are off the north coast. Covering an area of ​​3247 km ² live 648 062 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012). By Peloritani and Nebrodes the province is mountainous, so that the population is concentrated mainly on the coast.
