Salim Ahmed Salim

Salim Ahmed Salim ( born January 23, 1942, Zanzibar ) is a Tanzanian diplomat and politician. He held, among others, the offices of the Prime Minister of his native land, both of the President of the UN General Assembly and the UN Security Council and the Secretary General of the Organization of African Unity.

Career

Early life (up to 1969)

Salim was in the early 1960s editor of a Tanzanian newspaper. He was then a diplomat. Salim was first from 1964-1965 Ambassador of the still independent of Zanzibar in Egypt and then from 1965-1968 for the now united in Tanzania India, during his stay in Delhi, he studied at the University of International Relations. 1968/1969, he headed the Department for Africa and the Middle East at the State Department Tanzania. In 1969 he was appointed ambassador of his country in the People's Republic of China and North Korea.

United Nations (1970-1980)

From 1970 to 1980, Salim Permanent Representative of Tanzania to the United Nations in New York. At the same time he was Ambassador to Cuba, Guyana, Barbados, Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago. During this time he led in 1976 to the UN Security Council as president and 1979/ 1980, the General Assembly of the United Nations during the 34th ordinary session and the eleventh special session period and during the sixth and seventh emergency meeting. In addition, he was from 1972-1980 Chairman of the UN Special Committee on Decolonization (Committee of 24). He sought the office of the UN Secretary General to success.

Back in Tanzania (1980-1989)

1980 Salim was appointed as Foreign Minister back to Tanzania. He retained this position until 1984 he was prime minister of his homeland. In 1985 he became Deputy Prime Minister, Defence and Minister of the Interior. He remained in this position until 1989.

Organization of African Unity (1989-2001)

Salim was elected on September 19, 1989 Secretary General of the Organization of African Unity. He was reelected twice in this post that he held for twelve years. During this time, he promoted specifically the rise of women in leadership positions of the OAU.

Subsequent items ( since 2001)

Salim is currently Chancellor of the Hubert Kairuki Memorial University in Dar es Salaam. He is currently the Special Representative of the African Union for Darfur region. Salim of Tanzania 's new president tried to be, but failed already in the primaries of his party. He is a member of many international committees.

Others

Salim is married and has three children. He was awarded six honorary doctorates.
