Sergei Gonchar

Sergei Gonchar (Russian: Сергей Викторович Гончар; born April 13, 1974 in Chelyabinsk, Russian SFSR ) is a Russian ice hockey player standing since June 2013 with the Dallas Stars in the National Hockey League contract.

Career

Gonchar began his career at Mechel Chelyabinsk, for which he ran aground in the 1990/91 season in the second-rate Perwaja league. In the course of the season he moved at the age of 16 years to local rivals Traktor Chelyabinsk, for which he completed twelve relegation matches the Wysschaja league. In the following season, he came to a total of 31 missions in the highest Soviet League, before joining Dynamo Moscow in the summer of 1992. During the NHL Entry Draft 1992 Gonchar has been selected in the first round at 14th overall position of the Washington Capitals.

Between 1992 and 1994 he was active for Dynamo in the International Hockey League. During these two years Gonchar played more of a defensive -oriented defender role and was occasionally involved in fist fights, among others, Alexander Selivanov, then playing for Spartak Moscow. 1993 won the championship Dynamo Gonchar with the International Hockey League, where he was employed in all ten playoff games. The following season he reached with Dynamo again the playoff final, in which his team the HK Lada Togliatti defeated with 2:3. After the end of the season in the IHL Gonchar flew to North America and completed two playoff games for the farm team of the Washington Capitals, the Portland Pirates in the American Hockey League. With the Pirates, he won at the end of the Calder Cup Playoffs.

From the 1994/95 AHL season Gonchar belonged to the permanent staff of the Portland Pirates. On February 7, 1995 Gonchar made ​​his debut in the National Hockey League with a game the Capitals against the Buffalo Sabres. In the 1998/99 season he scored the first Russian defenders more than 20 goals in an NHL season. At the end of the seasons 2000/ 01 and 2002/ 03 Gonchar was appointed Second All-Star Team in the NHL.

In March 2004, the defender of the Capitals in exchange for Shaone Morrisonn and two draft picks was transferred to the Boston Bruins. Gonchar represented his country in both the junior and senior level on the international stage.

For the first time played the defending champion at the European Junior Championships in 1992 for Russia. He was appointed to the All- Star team of the tournament and also named the best defensive player of the competition.
