Thelma Stovall

Thelma Hawkins Stovall Loyace ( born April 1, 1919 in Munfordville, Hart County, Kentucky, † February 4, 1994 in Louisville, Kentucky) was an American politician. Between 1975 and 1979 she was Deputy Governor of the State of Kentucky.

Career

Thelma Stovall was still in her youth to Louisville. In the early 1930s she worked for the firm of Brown and Williamson Tobacco Corporation to secure a livelihood for themselves and their family during the Great Depression. They also came with the trade union movement in contact, which remained connected throughout their lives they. Politically, she joined the Democratic Party. Between 1950 and 1956 she was a Member of the House of Representatives from Kentucky. In the years 1956, 1964 and 1972 she participated in the respective Democratic National Convention as a delegate. From 1952 to 1956 she headed the youth organization of their party in Kentucky. Between 1960 and 1964, and again from 1968 to 1972 she held the post of the Kentucky State Treasurer, representing the Minister of Finance of that State. From 1956-1960 and 1964-1968 and 1972-1975 she was Secretary of State of Kentucky. This office she had then again 1972-1975 held. Thus, she has served since 1956 to 1979, including her time as Deputy Governor, top jobs in the state government of Kentucky.

1975 Stovall was the first woman on the side of Julian Carroll as Vice- Governor of the State of Kentucky. This office she held between 1975 and 1979. Yet she was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate. During one of several representatives of the governor took also pardons. In 1979, she ran unsuccessfully in the primary of their party for the office of governor. Then it is no longer politically have appeared. She died on 4 February 1994 in Louisville.
