Toyo Province

Toyo (Japanese豊 国, Toyo no kuni ) was an old province of Japan in ancient times. It was located on the island of Kyūshū and stretched out over the eastern part of present-day Fukuoka Prefecture and the entire Oita Prefecture.

History

The first mention is found in the Kojiki from the year 712 in the section on the mythological birth of the Japanese islands (国産 み, Kuniumi ):

「次生、筑紫島。此島亦、身一而、有面四。面毎有名。故、筑紫国謂、白日別。豊国、言、豊日別。肥国、言、建日向日豊久士比泥別。熊曾国、言、建日別。」

" Next, the island of Tsukushi was [= Kyushu ] born. Also [ see Shikoku ], this island has a body and four faces, each face has a name. Thus the country Tsukushi Shira -bi -wake is called, the country is called Toyo Toyo -bi -wake, the country will take hi -hi- mukahi - toyo - kuji - hine - called wake, the country is Kumaso Take- bi- wake called. "

Towards the end of the 7th century, the province was Toyo Buzen (Eng. "Front - Toyo " ) and Bungo (Eng. "Behind - Toyo " ) split into two areas. Both countries together were called and Ryoho (両 豊, dt " the two Toyo " ) and later as Hoshu (豊 州, dt " Toyo provinces ") HiLo ( " the two Toyo "二 豊, dt ). Both bu and hō are on- readings of the character of Toyo.
