Villa Lugano

Villa Lugano is a district in the south of the Argentine capital, Buenos Aires. He is one of the major parts of the city with about 114,000 inhabitants (as of 2001) on an area of 9.2 km ². The population density, at just under 12,400 inhabitants per km ² somewhat below the average of Buenos Aires, with about 13,500 inhabitants / km ². The population of the district increased between 1991 and 2001 by 13 percentage points. Together with Villa Soldati and Villa Riachuelo is the district administrative district C8.

Villa Lugano is bounded by the streets Avenida Eva Peron, Av. General Paz, Calle José Barros Pazos, Av. Lisandro de la Torre, Av. Coronel Roca and Calle Escalada.

History and Description

The Swiss immigrant José Ferdinando Francisco Soldati (* May 30, 1864 in Neggio, Ticino, Switzerland ) bought a farm near the present-day intersection of Calle Murguiondo and Avenida Riestra. He divided the land and founded on 18 October 1908, place to which he gave the name of Lugano in memory of his old home. The town developed only gradually: 1912 lived there only about 40 families.

In the years 1975 to 1980 was built the plan Alborada Luis Piedrabuena quarter as part of the housing program. It consists mainly of high-rise buildings, apartment buildings and single-family homes slightly lower.

In Villa Lugano are also five Villa Miserias, making it one of the district along with Villa Soldati to those with most slums of the capital.

On October 18, 1909, the station was opened in Villa Lugano, on 23 March 1910, the " Campo de Aviación de Lugano ", the first airport in the country. Near the airport, the Frenchman Paul Castaibert built the first Argentine aircraft. In Villa Lugano today is also a part of the " Universidad Tecnológica Nacional ".

Other attractions in the area include the " Parque Indoamericano ". It is approximately 130 acres in size and has achieved more than 4,000 different species of trees.
