Werkendam

Werkendam ( listen? / I ) is a municipality in the Netherlands, North Brabant province. It has a total area of ​​124.7 km ², of which about 10 % water.

Location and economic

The community forms the western part of the so-called Land van Heusden en Altena, between Dordrecht, which is beyond the Merwede - stream in the northwest and Heusden in North Brabant in the south, which is beyond the Bergsche Maas. The A27 Utrecht -Breda highway crosses the area from north to south. The northeastern neighboring community, Gorinchem, has the nearest station ( 5 km from there by bus to Werkendam ).

History

Werkendam originated in the middle of the 13th century, in a small river De works, which is perhaps caused by water plants. In 1641 the village was burning mostly down. The Werkendam low on the river between Rotterdam and the Ruhr lying has always been a town of sailors, formerly of fishermen and bins cutters. In the 20th century the craft of dredging of inland waters and outside ports was added.

Dussen grew up around the castle built in 1393. Village and castle were destroyed in the floods of 1421. In the year 1456 was the castle, which was inhabited by local lords of the family of Van der Dussen been restored. Dussen was an independent municipality until 1997, the castle served from 1954-1997 as the town hall.

In the winter of 1944/45, the Battle of the Kapelsche Veer between the Wehrmacht and the Allied troops took place nearby.
