Premieres

  • JANUARY 21: The March of Women by Ethel Smyth will be premiered in the Pall Mall in London. Another performance takes place on 23 March at the Royal Albert Hall, from where the song undergoes a rapid spread in England, and is the anthem of the British suffragette movement.
  • JANUARY 26: The opera Der Rosenkavalier by Richard Strauss with the conductor Ernst von Schuch premiered in Dresden Court Opera. The work with the libretto by the Austrian writer Hugo von Hofmannsthal, whose title was disputed until the end, an overwhelming success is granted.
  • MARCH 25: The world premiere of the operetta Grigri by Paul Lincke will take place in Cologne on Metropol Theater.
  • MARCH 28: The comic opera The Fair at Sorochyntsi by Modest Petrovich Mussorgsky based on a story by Nikolai Vasilyevich Gogol from the collection Evenings on the hamlet in Dikanka premiered decades after the composer's death in Saint Petersburg.

  • MAY 22: The world premiere of The Martyrdom of Saint Sébastien ( The Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian ), a " mystery in five acts " by Gabriele D' Annunzio with music by Claude Debussy in collaboration with André Caplet, at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris gets a scandal. The Archbishop of Paris, Léon- Adolphe Amette, forbids all Catholics to visit the ideas because of the representation of the saint by a scantily clad Jewish and Russian woman, the dancer Ida Rubinstein. The audience reacts snubbed or bored because of the duration of the piece.
  • June 2: The opera Isabeau of Pietro Mascagni premiered under the composer's direction at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires. The libretto of leggenda drammatica comes in three acts by Luigi Illica. The inspiration was the story of Lady Godiva. The opera quickly became popular and inspired a number of other operas based on legends.
