1976 World Ice Hockey Championships
The Games of the 43 World Ice Hockey Championships and 54th at the Olympic Ice Hockey Championship 1976 found in Poland ( for the first time since 1931 ) and Switzerland. Venue of the A group was from 8 to 25 April Katowice in Upper Silesia. The B group played from March 18 to 27 in the Swiss cities of Aarau and Biel / Bienne and the games of the C group were held from March 8 to 13 in Gdansk, Poland. It was attended by a total of 21 teams.

A World Championship
Mode and tournament
This year's World Cup was the first attended by professional players were allowed to participate. Benefited in particular the United States, the fourth place established after the drain and rises of recent years again in the world rankings. The increase in the A group into 8 teams made a new competition format for the World and European required. After a simple League round then played the best 4 teams in the champions round for the title and for the medals, the four remaining teams played in the so-called relegation round at the Campsite and 5-8 against relegation. The points from the first round were taken there. In the EM- rating there was a return to the old principle that only the WM- placement is crucial. For Canada, which should play from the next World Cup again in the A group, had to be made a free place; so there was this year, two relegated with only one climber. The B group was thus temporarily increased to 9 teams.
The World Cup tournament in Poland lived from the surprising weakness of the seemingly all-powerful Soviets. This had to bring as much effort as early as 1972 after the Olympic tournament once their peak performance. Right at the beginning there were doing a sensational 4:6 defeat against the hosts Poland, still followed by two more defeats in the further course of the tournament. 3 defeats in a World Cup, it had never been for the USSR. The Poles took advantage of the sensational victory against the Soviets ultimately nothing; in a highly dramatic relegation battle they had to play against the team of the Federal Republic of Germany the way to the B group after a defeat in the last minute. Became world champion for the fourth time Czechoslovakia, at the same time won their 13th European title.
Venue
The tournament was held in Katowice, Poland. The venue was the Spodek Arena, which offers two rinks and at hockey games offers 10,000 respectively 3,000 spectators. Usually the smaller ice hockey venue for the Department of GKS Katowice.
