Agiez

Agiez ( fr. [a ( ː ) ʒje / a ː ʒi ], in local dialect: [(a ) a ː dzi ː ] ) is a municipality in the district of Jura-Nord Vaudois in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland.

Geography

Agiez is located on 526 m above sea level. M., 2 km west of the town Orbe and 12 km southwest of the district capital Yverdon- les- Bains ( straight line ). The farming village extends into a slight depression at the foot of the Jura plateau between the Orbeebene and the first Jura chain.

The area of ​​5.5 km ² large municipality area includes a portion of the Jura plateau and the valley of the village of Bach's Agiez. In the east the area extends to the high surface Planches de Commune (up to 575 m above sea level. M. ), in the west to the slowly rising against the Jura heights, which are partly covered by forests ( Bois de Chenes and Bois de Fives ). On an elevation of 640 m above sea Fives is. Population

With 280 inhabitants (as at 31 December 2012) Agiez is one of the small communities of the Canton of Vaud. Of the 96.4 % inhabitants are French-speaking, 1.8 % and 0.9 % portugiesischsprachig in German (as of 2000). The population of Agiez amounted in 1850 to 344 residents in 1900 to 279 inhabitants. A further population decline occurred until 1970 (185 inhabitants). Since then, a slight upward trend was observed again.

Economy

Agiez is a dominantly agricultural village today. Thanks to the fertile lands on the foot of the Jura plateau agriculture is mainly operated near the village there is something viticulture. History

Finds from the Neolithic and medieval tombs indicate an early inspection and settlement of the municipality. The first documentary mention of the place occurs in the year 982: Et ego Haziacus ... in pago de Atiaco. Its name is attributed to a derivation from the Latin personal name Abidius with the Celtic Ortsnamensuffix -akos/-acum.

Agiez, which belonged to the kingdom of Burgundy was, at the latest in 1028 was donated to the monastery Romainmôtier. The interests of the monastery were henceforth represented by a resident in Agiez Meier. With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536, the village came to Kastlanei and bailiwick Romainmôtier. After the collapse of the ancien régime Agiez belonged from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic to the canton of Geneva, who came up then with the enactment of the Act of Mediation in the canton of Vaud. It was assigned to the district of Orbe.

Attractions

The Protestant parish church Agiez was first mentioned in the 14th century. The present building dates largely from 1687 and has a paneled barrel vault. A Gothic chapel was built in the 15th century. The Château d' Agiez, former seat of the Meiers, is actually a fortified manor house, whose current buildings dating from the 16th century. It has a solid hexagonal stair turret.
