Rances

Rances is a municipality in the district of Jura-Nord Vaudois in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland.

Geography

Rances is at 564 m above sea level. M., 4 km north of Orbe and 8 km west-southwest of the district capital Yverdon- les- Bains ( straight line ). The farming village stretches along the edge of the Jura plateau between the Orbeebene and the Jura, north of the valley of Mujon.

The area of ​​9.8 km ² large municipality area includes a portion of the Jura plateau and the Jura Vaudois. The communal land extends in a narrow strip from the Bois de Vuavre (515 m above sea level. M. ) westward across the Talniederung of Mujon, the plateau and the steep slopes of the Jura to the anticline Suchet. The Seek forms with 1'588 m above sea level. M. the highest point of Rances. Population

With 437 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) Rances is one of the small communities of the Canton of Vaud. Of the 96.7 % inhabitants are French-speaking, German-speaking 1.2 % and 0.7 % Italian-speaking (as of 2000). The population of Rances amounted in 1900 to 493 inhabitants. After a strong migration was recorded until 1970 (314 inhabitants). Since then, the population has risen significantly.

Economy

Rances is a dominantly agricultural village today. On the southern slope below the village, there is a wine region. On the fertile soils of the Jura plateau farming is operated while prevailing in the Jura hills cattle breeding and dairy farming. More jobs offers local small businesses. Traffic

History

The territory of Rances was settled very early, which is attested by finds of shell stones, settlement remains from the Bronze Age and of grave mounds from the Iron Age. The first written mention of the village was already in the year 973 under the name Rancias. At this time, Rances belonged to Pagus ( Gau ) of Yverdon in the Kingdom of Burgundy. In the Middle Ages the town was part of the reign of Les Clées. 1548 fell almost the entire village except the church and some houses surrounding a fire victim.

With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536 Rances was part of the Kastlanei Les Clées under the bailiwick of Yverdon. After the collapse of the ancien régime, the village belonged from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic to the canton of Geneva, who came up then with the enactment of the Act of Mediation in the canton of Vaud. Attractions
