Premier is a municipality in the district of Jura-Nord Vaudois in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland.

Geography

Premier is situated on 869 m above sea level. M., 7 km west-southwest of Orbe and 17 km west-southwest of the district capital Yverdon- les- Bains ( straight line ). The farming village stretches along the Jura south slope, north of Taleinschnittes of Nozon, in panoramic location high above the plains of the Vaud Mittelland.

The area of ​​6.1 km ² large municipality area includes a portion of the Vaud Jura. The communal land extends from the edge of the Bois de Forel westward across the meadows of Premier and the Bois de Ban to the Jura mountains which forms the northeastern continuation of the Dent de Vaulion. This is limited by the valleys of the Orbe in the north and in the south of Nozon. At the height Sur Grati is with 1'170 meters above sea level. M. reached the highest point of the Premier. Here there is an extensive Jura mountain meadows with the typical tall spruce trees that are either individually or in groups. From the municipality surface 1997 3 % was attributable to settlements, 49 % of forest and woody plants and 48% to agriculture.

At Premier include some individual farms. The neighboring communities of Premier are in the northwest Vallorbe, southwest Vaulion, in the south Romainmôtier -Envy, in the east and in the north Bretonnières Les Clées.

Population

With 188 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) Premier is one of the small communities of the Canton of Vaud. Of the residents 94.2 % are French, 2.4 % English speaking and German-speaking 1.9 % (as of 2000). The population of Premier amounted in 1850 to 292 inhabitants. After a strong migration was recorded until 1970 (138 inhabitants). Since then, the population has risen significantly.

Economy

Premier has long been a mainly coined by the farming village. Even today, agriculture, animal husbandry and dairying have a great importance. Especially in the 19th century the craft (forging, weaving and wood processing) served as an important source of income, while the local small businesses today offer only a few jobs. Since Premier developed in recent decades into a residential community, many of the working population commuters.

Traffic

The community is located off the major thoroughfares. The main access is from Romainmôtier -Envy ago. By Postbus course, which runs from Croy after Vaulion, Premier is connected to the public transport network.

History

The first written mention of the village was carried out in 1316 under the name Premyer; also the name Prumier appeared in the documents. Since the Middle Ages Premier belonged to the rule Romainmôtier. The hamlet Lanffrey below the village halfway to Romainmôtier was abandoned in the 15th century. With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536, was Prime Minister of the bailiwick and Kastlanei Romainmôtier. After the collapse of the ancien régime, the village belonged from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic to the canton of Geneva, who came up then with the enactment of the Act of Mediation in the canton of Vaud. It was in 1798 the district of Orbe allocated. In the years 1884 and 1898 Premier was hit by severe fires.
