Corcelles -sur- Chavornay is a municipality in the district of Jura-Nord Vaudois in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland.

Geography

Corcelles -sur- Chavornay is located on 558 m above sea level. M., 6 km east-southeast of Orbe and 9 km south-southwest of the district capital Yverdon- les- Bains ( straight line ). The scattered village stretches along a sloping gently to the west slope above Chavornay, about 100 m above the Orbeebene, in the Vaud Mittelland.

The area of ​​5.5 km ² large municipality area includes a portion of the Vaud Mittelland. The western part of the municipality comprises the open slope of Corcelles -sur- Chavornay with the headwaters of the Ruisseau de Sadaz. Population

With 342 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) Corcelles -sur- Chavornay one of the small communities of the Canton of Vaud. Of the 92.8 % inhabitants are French-speaking, German-speaking 4.9 % and 1.0 % Spanish speaking (as of 2000). The population of Corcelles -sur- Chavornay amounted in 1850 to 336 residents in 1900 to 307 inhabitants. History

The first documentary mention of the place was already in the year 885 under the name Corceles. Later, the names Corzales ( 1228 ) published, Courcelle ( 1397 ) and Courselles ( 1433 ). The place name derives from the Latin word Corticella ( small yard ).

Corcelles -sur- Chavornay belonged in the Middle Ages of the Kingdom of Upper Burgundy. Since the 12th century it was under the rule Bavois and therefore slid after 1263 in the sphere of influence of Savoy. As part of an estate settlement broke the village of Bavois 1520 and formed henceforth own little rule.

With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536 Corcelles -sur- Chavornay came under the administration of the bailiwick of Yverdon. After the collapse of the ancien régime, the village belonged from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic to the canton of Geneva, who came up then with the enactment of the Act of Mediation in the canton of Vaud. 1798 was assigned to the district of Orbe.

Attractions

The present building mentioned in the 13th century parish church was built in 1754. The castle with a central tower dates from the 17th century. It was from 1884 to 1963 a convalescent home, today rental apartments are housed in it. In the center some characteristic farmhouses from the 17th to 19th centuries have been preserved.
