Agueda is a city ( Cidade ) in Portugal with 11,357 inhabitants (as of 30 June 2011).

History

The present district Agueda has a plurality finds from the Roman period, especially at the archaeological site Estação Arqueológica de Cabeço do Vouga. Probably crossed the Roman road from Aeminium (today Coimbra ) by Cale (now Gaia ) the place. The place name derives from the river running here, who was known as Ágata already in the 9th century. The place was known as Casal Lausato before as Agada took the name of the river as Agatha and then in the 11th century. The river was itself originally named after Saint Agatha.

Today's village Agueda was probably in the 11th or 12th century, during the re- settlements during the Reconquista. Sports
