Asselfingen

Asselfingen is a municipality in eastern Alb- Donau-Kreis in Baden- Württemberg.

Geography

Geographical location

The community Asselfingen lies on a ridge south of the Lonetals and on the northern edge of the Swabian Danube moss, around 20 kilometers north-east of Ulm. It is thus the easternmost municipality in the Alb- Donau district.

Neighboring communities

The municipality is bordered to the north by the district of Bissingen the city Herbrechtingen, on the east by the city Niederstotzingen, both in the district of Heidenheim, on the south by the Bavarian city Leipheim and to the west by Rammingen.

History

Asselfingen was first mentioned in 1143 in a deed of the monastery Anhausen an der Brenz. 1504 was the place in the possession of the imperial city of Ulm and therefore became Protestant during the Reformation. 1803, the city lost its status as Ulm Free Imperial City, and came with all possessions to Bavaria. 1810 the border between Bavaria and Württemberg was finally settled by a treaty, thereby Asselfingen was part of Württemberg.

In 1939, the Lion Man was found in the cave Hohlenstein - Stadel, an ivory figurine from the Paleolithic period, which is considered one of the oldest known human sculptures.

The municipality belongs to the Gemeindeverwaltungsverband Langenau with headquarters in Langenau.

The council is currently provided exclusively by members of two voter communities.
