Laichingen

Laichingen is a small town in the Alb -Donau-Kreis in Baden- Württemberg.

Despite its small size Laichingen is the largest city in the area. They therefore assumes the role of a middle center together with Blaubeuren. It is considered the city of weavers in the Swabian Alb.

Geography

Geographical location

Laichingen is on the Laichinger Alb, a branch of the Swabian Alb. It is located on a former volcanic vent on the Alb plateau, about 25 km west of Ulm.

Neighboring communities

The municipality is bordered to the north by the High town in the district of Göppingen, to the east by Merklingen and spine city, to the south Berghülen, the city Blaubeuren and Herold workshop and to the west by the Gutsbezirk Münsingen and Roman stone, both in the district of Reutlingen and Wester home.

History

The name Laichingen should go back to the Alemanni chieftain Laicho, who after Christ founded a settlement here in the 5th century. Emperor Charles IV in 1364 offered the inhabitants of the city to right, these refused, however, allegedly because they wanted to build any walls.

Until the Middle Ages the tradition of Laichinger linen weaving goes back. The poor soils on the Alb gave her no more, and so the inhabitants have relied on the cultivation of flax and the livelihood through trade with the 25 km distant city of Ulm. One of the most established in 1677 Weber houses stood in Laichingen to 2002. It was dismantled and rebuilt at the museum Beuren to visit now. Today, many still now be produced industrially, weaving establishments in Laichingen are located.

In the city center Laichingens Previously, a so-called huele. Hülen consisted of weathered volcanic tuff. In them, collected water and they formed the basis of many settlements in the Swabian Alb. The Huele served as livestock watering and fire-extinguishing purposes. The drinking water was laboriously brought from the valleys. In 1950 Laichingen again received city rights.

In the 1970s, some surrounding places were incorporated. Today they form the districts Laichingens.

Mayor

The mayor is elected for a term of eight years. The first term of Friedhelm Werner ended on 18 December 2004. On 10 October 2004, he was re-elected with 68 % of the votes for a second term.

Culture and sights

The Laichinger Tiefenhöhle

Laichingen is also known by the Laichinger deep cave, the only developed show cave vertical cave in Germany, which has a walk-in depth of 55 m. The cave is located about 1 km south of Laichingen. It was discovered in 1892 by the sand graves Johann Georg Mack random.

  • The former mill on the bleaching mountain was in operation from 1902 to 1972. Originally built on the 774 meters above sea level in an exposed location system should be running as a windmill and generate additional electricity. North German engineers had constructed a wind turbine with 82 blades and 12 meters in diameter. The windmill was built in Holstein, and was for some time in Laichingen behind the distinctive brick building in operation. However, it did not always have the required 12 hp, so soon a gas engine was used for support. A strong storm damaged the wind turbine, it was dismantled.

Regular events

Laichingen is known as a market town and had early market rights. The community had been awarded by its central location and its importance on the middle Alb city rights, but this could not accept. The city charter would have been connected to build a city wall with the duty, and this was not feasible for the poor Albgemeinde. However, they still received market rights. The Pentecostal market is guaranteed, for example, since 1788.

Even today, markets are held each year, attracting thousands of visitors. On these days the city of Laichingen is completely blocked and the streets crammed with market stalls selling typical products market. Previously this was an opportunity to buy things all that could not even be produced, and so there is haberdashery and knives, pots, ceramics and glasses, overalls, underwear, hats and shirts to buy. The physical well there stomach bread and roasted almonds, cotton candy, Turkish delight and of course fried sausages. There are also toys stalls, flower stalls, fruit and vegetables, for several years, CDs, Indian clothing or other fashion items.

A traditional food market in Laichingen are tripe. They are mainly of stalls from local farms and butchers to buy.

The dates are usually tied to religious holidays, so change annually. The market starts at 8 clock and usually ends by 17 clock. Earlier, the market started already by 5 clock with a cattle market, but due to BSE, swine fever and other diseases, these cattle markets were repeatedly exposed to over the years and are therefore now only preserved as a small animal markets.
