Awa Province (Chiba)

Awa (Japanese安 房 国, Awa no kuni ), also Boshu (房 州) or rare Anshu (安 州) called, was an old province of Japan, and is now part of Chiba prefecture.

The province was located at the tip of the Boso Peninsula and bordered by the province of Kazusa, from which it was separated 718. Both together are also known as Nanso (南 総, " South Fusa " ) refers, according to the precursor of Kazusa Province. It consisted of four districts ( kori ) Asahina (朝 夷 郡today: Asai -gun ), Awa (安 房 郡) Heguri (平 群 郡today: Hei -gun ) and Nagasa (长 狭 郡).

The provincial capital ( Kokufu ) was in the district Heguri. Although its location has not yet been discovered, it is taken for the district Fuchū - an alternative name for the capital - from Tateyama to.

There was an eponymous province of Awa on the island of Shikoku, which however is written differently in Japanese.
