Cabrières, Gard

Cabrières is a commune with 1469 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Gard of the Languedoc -Roussillon region.

Geography

Cabrières located 15 kilometers northeast of Nîmes in the Garrigues hills.

History

The area has been inhabited for over 6000 years. This is mainly due to the convenient location. The village is located close to a source, is protected from the Mistral and easy to defend. In the 1st century BC, the Romans settled in the area, it emerged six Roman villas. In the year 978 the village was first mentioned as Villa Cabrieras. In 1435 it finally got its present name. The name derives from the Latin capra, which means goat. In the 16th century, the village suffered from the Huguenot wars. 1943 established the German occupiers in cabrières a military base.

The village is characterized mainly by its geological wealth: In cabrières to find the oldest rocks of the Languedoc. They are 500-325 million years old.
