Catron County, New Mexico

Catron County is a county in the west of the state of New Mexico in the United States. The County has 3725 inhabitants and has an area of 17 946 square kilometers, the largest surface area in the state. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is reserve.

Geography

Rivers in the county are the Tularosa River, the San Francisco River and the West Fork Gila River. Almost the entire County is located in the Gila National Forest.

The area of the county is 17,946 square kilometers; 3 of them are square kilometers (0.02 percent) of water. The county is bordered clockwise to the counties: Cibola County, Socorro County, Sierra County, Grant County, Greenlee County ( Arizona) and Apache County ( Arizona).

History

The name goes back to Thomas B. Catron, of the young state of New Mexico in 1912 represented the first U.S. Senator in Washington.

According to the census of 2000, there were 3,543 people in the county. There were 1,584 households and 1,040 families. The population density was less than 1 inhabitant per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 87.75 % White, 0.28 % African American, 2.20 % Native American, 0.68 % Asian, 0.06 % Pacific Islander residents from the and 5.42% from other races groups; 3.61% were descended from two or more races. 19.16 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 1,584 households out of which 22.30 % have children under the age of 18 living with them. 55.40 % were married couples living together, 7.60 % had a female householder with no husband. 34.30 % were non-families. 30.10 % of all households and 11.40% had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.23 and the average family size was 2.75 persons.

Based on the county the population was spread out with 21.10 % under the age of 18, 4.20 % from 18 to 24, 19.50% from 25 to 44 years, 36.40 % between 45 and 64 years and 18.80% were 65 years old or older. The average age was 48 years. For every 100 females there were 104.70 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 101.70 males.

The median income for a household was $ 23,892, and the median income for a family was $ 30,742. Males have a median income of $ 26,064, women $ 18,315. The per capita income was $ 13,951. 24.50 % of the population and 17.40 % of families are below the poverty line. 39.60 % of those under age 18 and 14.90% were 65 years or older.
