Cuarny

Cuarny is a municipality south of Lake Neuchâtel in western Switzerland. It is located in the district of Jura-Nord Vaudois in the canton of Vaud.

Geography

Cuarny is located at 580 m above sea level. M., 4 km east of the district capital Yverdon- les- Bains ( straight line ). The village street line extends on a terrace on the southern slope of the Montela Molassehügelland in the northern Vaud Mittelland.

The area of ​​4.6 km ² large municipality area includes a portion of the hill country between Lake Neuchâtel and the Broyetal. In the northwest of the area, the height of the Montela is ( 669 m above sea level. M. the highest point of Cuarny ), west of the Haut de Baume ( 642 m above sea level. M. ). South and east of this ridge adjoins the terrace of Cuarny. The south-eastern part is occupied by the valley of Cuarny, flanked to the south by the steep slopes Chaboleire and Camp Anne ( on the north side of the high plateau of Cronay ). From the municipality surface 1997 3 % was attributable to settlements, 27 % of forest and woody plants and 70 % to agriculture.

Population

With 168 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) Cuarny one of the small communities of the Canton of Vaud. Of the residents 98.3 % are French, 1.2 % Italian and 0.6 % German-speaking (as of 2000). The population amounted in 1850 to 292 inhabitants, 1900 to 263 inhabitants. Thereafter, a decrease by 43% to 150 inhabitants was recorded due to high levels of emigration until 1980; Since then, a slight increase in population was registered again.

Economy

Cuarny was until the second half of the 20th century, mainly coined by farming village. Even today, the farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding have an important role in the economic structure of the population. More jobs are in small local manufacturing and services available. In recent decades, Cuarny has developed thanks to its attractive location into a residential community. Many employed persons are therefore commuters who work mainly in Yverdon.

Traffic

The community is conveniently technically quite well developed, although it is located away from larger thoroughfares on a connecting road from Pomy after Yvonand. The highway connecting Yverdon- Sud in 1981 opened A1 (Lausanne -Yverdon ) is about 5 km from the center. The inaugurated in 2001, continuing the A1 from Yverdon to Payerne crosses the municipality and has an up to 50 m high and 900 m long bridge south slope of the valley of Cuarny. History

During excavations, which were carried out before the construction of the A1 motorway, numerous remains of settlements and objects came to light that originate from the Bronze Age and the La Tène period. Other finds are dated to the Burgundian. The first written mention of the village was carried out in 1174 under the name Quarnie. Later, the names Cuarniez published ( 1449 ) and Cuarnier ( 1453).

The western part of Cuarny belonged since the Middle Ages to the possession of the abbey of Mont Heron, while the eastern lower part of the reign of Saint -Martin was assumed. With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536 Cuarny came under the administration of the bailiwick of Yverdon. After the collapse of the ancien régime, the village belonged from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic to the canton of Geneva, who came up then with the enactment of the Act of Mediation in the canton of Vaud. 1798 was assigned to the district of Yverdon. Within the framework of a boundary settlement, the Court Grand Fin 1964 by Pomy came to Cuarny. In the 1970s drilling was carried out unsuccessfully for oil in the municipality.

Attractions

At the point of the mentioned already in the 14th century chapel of Saint- Laurent, the present church was built in 1763. In the center some stately farmhouses dating from the 17th to 19th centuries have been preserved.
